Mass adoption only makes sense if Bitcoin’s core values persist

We spoke with Matej Zhak, CEO of Trezor, a company that helped develop hardware bitcoin wallets and promotes self-custody of crypto assets.

Core message from the CEO

«Mass adoption only makes sense if Bitcoin's core values are preserved»

Matej Zhak argued that wider use of bitcoin must not come at the expense of decentralization, individual sovereignty and permissionless access.

State of the industry and user behaviour

According to the CEO, the industry has evolved significantly from Satoshi’s original vision, yet many users still keep assets on centralized platforms for convenience and liquidity.

He explained that custody tools remain essential for users who prioritize control over private keys and who seek independence from custodial intermediaries.

Regulation, product demand and risks

On regulation, Zhak noted that European frameworks increasingly address hardware wallet interoperability and consumer protections without prescribing custodial models.

He also described how Trezor’s user base is diversifying, with newcomers focused on usability and veteran users prioritizing advanced security features.

Security outlook

Regarding future threats, the CEO mentioned quantum computing and artificial intelligence as evolving challenges that require ongoing firmware updates and cryptographic research.

Zhak emphasized that the hardware wallet sector must adapt while preserving core principles that guarantee user autonomy and resistance to centralized control.
